When I use the Etsy app to sell to someone locally, is there a fee? What if they pay cash? Do I have to use the Etsy card reader for credit or debit payments?
Using the Sell on Etsy app to take in-person payments has several facets and different scenarios. So I will summarize the main ones as concisely as I can.
Requirements for Etsy app payments
The only things that are absolutely necessary to accept in-person payments that will be linked to your shop are to be a US seller who accepts Direct Checkout and to use the Sell on Etsy app. You need at least iOS 7 or Android 4.0. The Etsy card reader is optional, but using it does offer the benefit of a lower fee as mentioned below.
Fees for Etsy app payments
When using the Sell on Etsy app to take payments, you never pay the 3.5% Etsy transaction fee. If you are selling from your listings (as opposed to creating a Quick Sale of an item not currently in your shop), you will pay the $.20 renewal fee if you have a quantity of more than one listed.
If the customer pays by cash or check, there is no payment processing fee.
If the customer uses a credit card or debit card, your payment processing fee is as follows:
- 2.75% per swipe if using the Etsy card reader OR
- 3% + $0.25 if you manually enter the card number (This is the same fee as when someone uses Direct Checkout in your shop.)
Sales numbers with Etsy app payments
No matter whether you sell an item from your existing shop inventory or create a Quick Sale of an item that’s not listed, each item sold will increase your total sales number in your shop.
When selling from listings, inventory is adjusted automatically.
Reviews after Etsy app payments
If you sell an item from your current shop listings and the customer has an Etsy account and s/he provides you with the email associated with that account, you can immediately send a receipt and the customer can later click through it to leave a review. Reviews are not possible for Quick Sales.
